WWE Smackdown Live Hits and Misses 6.26.18 w/ The Chairman

Here are the hits and misses of Smackdown Live this week. Before I get started, I probably should make a quick comment on the rumored FOX deal is now official. Starting in October 2019, Smackdown Live will be airing on Fox and going back to Friday nights. I personally am not a fan of this move to Friday’s. I feel the ratings could suffer because the target demographic of 18-34 usually likes to do things on Friday’s outside of their homes. Plus people anymore will either DVR the show and watch on their time. Another flaw in my opinion is right after a pay per view, I want to know what’s going to happen next. I don’t want to wait how many days. I want it to be fairly fresh. I guess the plus side is if I’m busy and can’t see it live, I can fast forward all the commercials! Really could do without hearing that sharing Coke jingle ten times a night. Anyways enough of that, let’s get to the hits and misses!

HIT: Daniel Bryan Finally Gets Meaningful Storyline

Who knows if we would’ve received another month of Bryan and Cass had Cass not screwed up. Fortunately for us Daniel Bryan is moving onto things more interesting. Sure he isn’t quite in the WWE Championship picture yet, but at least the road is starting to look fun. The Miz feud is being teased and being slowly built once again. I’m pretty confident this is taking place at Summerslam. Right now though the Bludgeon Brothers seem to be Bryan’s nemesis. After the interactions from last week, many were speculating who would team up with Bryan. Way things were starting tonight I almost thought we were going to get some strange Daniel Bryan and Miz team up. Fortunately Harper and Rowan managed to keep their hands off the Miz. Turns out it was none other than Kane that returned and made the save. Team Hell No has reunited and Paige has awarded Bryan and Kane a Smackdown Live Tag Team title shot against the Bludgeon Brothers at Extreme Rules. I’ve seen a mixed reaction with the news of a Team Hell No reunion. I’m honestly fine with it. Here’s the deal! Bryan clearly isn’t facing AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. The Miz match is being saved for an A List ppv Summerslam? Nakamura is feuding with Jeff Hardy (or a security dog apparently?) He’s finally away from Big Cass, I don’t know what more you want? Plus the Bludgeon Brothers are finally getting involved in a meaningful feud again. They’ve already blazed a path thru the Usos, New Day, and Club. Not exactly alot of quality tag teams left. Because if Harper and Rowan face one of the teams listed already, the IWC will cry about that as well. I think this story is going benefit all parties involved and I’m going to sit back and enjoy it.

MISS: Where Was Everybody?

Even though Smackdown Live was pretty good for the most part. I have to ask where everybody was tonight. No AJ Styles, no Shinsuke Nakamura (apparently he’s “hurt”), no Samoa Joe, no Carmella, no Asuka, no Charlotte Flair (who’s recovering), no Iiconics, and barely Andrade “Cien” Almas again….. There’s definitely two sides to this coin. On one side, we’re not getting overexposed on the Smackdown Live roster hence why we’re not getting burnt out by it. However if I went to the show tonight in person and didn’t see alot of the superstars I named, I’d be quite pissed. Now I’m sure there may have been a dark match, but this is a lengthy amount of featured talent to be left off the show.

HIT: Sanity Finally Wrestles a Match on Smackdown Live

Sanity was supposed to debut against the Usos last week, but instead decided to ambush them. Tonight Jeff Hardy was supposed to face Shinsuke Nakamura in a match that was built up for a week. Once again however, the E decided to say that Nakamura was hurt and couldn’t compete. Now I have no proof he was hurt other than what WWE is saying, but I don’t have any he wasn’t hurt. I trust WWE saying superstars are hurt as much as I trust the NFL giving players the questionable tag and saying they’re not going to play all week until Sunday and they’ve miraculously are able to play. Anyways back to the topic at hand. Eric Young addressed Jeff Hardy’s open challenge for the United States title. We got a decent amount of time for this one until the Usos showed up. Things broke down and the match got tossed. Sure enough after the break we found ourselves in a six man tag.

MISS: Sanity Loses Main Roster Debut

So we had Eric Young, Killian Dain, and Alexander Wolfe or Sanity take on the Usos and Jeff Hardy. This was a nice six man tag and it got alot of time. Makes up I guess for the time we didn’t get to see Sanity. When it was all said and done though, Jeff Hardy and the Usos defeated Sanity. Many folks on Twitter were not pleased with the booking of this one at all. I definitely question it. I guess I don’t understand giving a brand new popular team a loss straight out of the gate. Especially to a throw together trio. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come for this NXT team, because let’s face it. The treatment of NXT tag teams on the main roster is average at best.

HIT: Becky Lynch Winning Streak is Straight Fire

With Charlotte Flair out of action until probably August, this makes Becky Lynch the de facto number one fan favorite of Smackdown Live women’s division. Of course depending who you talk to, Becky is the number one anyway (she’s mine). Unlike the hot mess we’re getting on Monday between the ladies, we got a decent match between Becky Lynch and Sonya Deville tonight. I’m on board with Becky picking up wins. Hopefully this leads to her getting a future title shot. Paige announced that Asuka would be getting another shot at Carmella at Extreme Rules. My dream match of Asuka vs Becky Lynch at Summerslam is still a remote possibility. Of course back when I predicted this, Asuka was still undefeated and Becky would be the one to end the streak. Either or, exciting times!

MISS: Naomi and Lana Glow

So a random segment took place with the cast of GLOW and Naomi and Lana. No idea what the point of it was, but we are celebrating the one year anniversary of Lavar Ball and family on Raw. Are they trying to unify Naomi and Lana? I don’t know, but it hurts knowing how much talent is being kept off the air just to enhance these two a smidge.
