WWE Friday Night Smackdown Hits and Misses 10.4.19 w/ The Chairman
It’s a new era for wrestling fans as WWE brings Smackdown to FOX. New logo, new stage, new network, it’s a blue new world for Smackdown. Already announced matches include Kofi Kingston looking to survive “The Beast” Brock Lesnar as he will put his WWE Championship on the line. Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens will face off in a ladder match where the loser must leave WWE. The Four Horsewomen will square off in a tag match where WWE Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch teams up with Charlotte Flair to face off against Sasha Banks and WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Bayley. The Rock is also in the house as well. This is a big night for Smackdown and wrestling fans as a whole. Let’s see how it all shakes out.
HIT: The Rock and The Man Lay the Smackdown on King Corbin STD
Smackdown kicked off with Becky Lynch, but she was quickly interrupted by King Corbin. However none other than The Rock made his presence felt on Smackdown. The Rock and The Man double teamed Corbin with a verbal assault. Rock called Corbin a Burger King on crack and encouraged crowds in every city to chant STD at Corbin because he’s a strong tough dude. In the end The Rock and The Man put the beatdown on Corbin and fans got to taste nostalgia seeing a People’s Elbow and a Rock Bottom put King Corbin down. Being The Rock was the one who coined the word Smackdown, it was fitting for him to usher in the new era of Smackdown on FOX.
HIT: The Four Horsewomen Tag Match
A few weeks ago on Raw we seen Becky and Charlotte team up to take on Sasha and Bayley. Still weird seeing Becky and Charlotte teaming up after their blood feud earlier this year. However they’re aligned once again to face their respective rivals. The match was a great way to kick off Smackdown. Charlotte was looking for the moonsault to the outside on Sasha before the first break, but Bayley knocked her off the turnbuckle to the floor. The women continued the action and Charlotte later on scored with her big moonsault off the top rope to the outside taking out both Sasha and Bayley. In the end it was Charlotte putting Bayley away with the Figure Eight. More than likely you’d assume Charlotte would earn another shot at Bayley’s Smackdown Women’s Championship since we have barely any announced matches for Hell in a Cell, but that remains to be seen.
HIT: Oh My God! They Killed Ramblin Rabbit!!!
While there were plenty of matches advertised for Smackdown. One that wasn’t was a Champion vs Champion match between Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura. However after Rollins entered the ring, we were interrupted by a Firefly Funhouse segment. Bray Wyatt and his friends introduced themselves to FOX and Ramblin Rabbit was dressed in Seth Rollins attire. Wyatt then proceeded to have a simulation of what is going to happen at Hell in a Cell when he locked Ramblin Rabbit in a cage with Mercy the Buzzard and Mercy ripped Ramblin Rabbit apart. The only downfall of all of this was the Rollins Nakamura match barely got started before it ended at the hands of the Fiend. Rollins was ambushed and thrown off the stage by the Fiend.
HIT: KO Saves His Job
Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon faced off in a ladder match where the winner got to stay in WWE and the loser was fired. There was a generic plain Money in the Bank style briefcase hanging in the balance. KO didn’t waste any time and went right after Shane. I will say for as much crap I give Shane, he had a good showing here. Between some big moves such as the elbow drop from the top turnbuckle to the commentary table where KO was to hitting his Coast to Coast. Shane also took some abuse such as being laid out on a ladder between the barricade and the ring apron where KO came crashing down with a frogsplash to getting powerbombed onto a ladder. There was no shenanigans here, Kevin Owens climbed the ladder and has finally gotten rid of Shane once in for all. Of course in wrestling never say never.
MISS: Random Eight Man Tag Fury
Smackdown was a cluster of trying to shove way too much content into a two hour window and it started to show in the second hour. This whole match could’ve been obviously cut because it literally served no purpose. Braun Strowman, Miz, and Heavy Machinery beat Bobby Roode, Dolph Ziggler, AJ Styles, and Randy Orton. Whatever! I guess the noteworthy thing was at the end when there was an altercation between Braun Strowman and Tyson Fury. Who is Tyson Fury? I have no idea? I guess with WWE on FOX now they’re going to try and cross sports worlds. More than likely Braun and Tyson Fury do something at Wrestlemania. Whatever, I don’t care.
MISS: Lumberjack Match
As Smackdown’s time started getting closer and closer to the end, fans were fearing for the worst for Kofi Kingston. However before we got to the main event, we had to endure a lumberjack match between Roman Reigns and Erick Rowan. Daniel Bryan joined in for commentary and the ring was surrounded by wrestlers. The match went way longer than it needed to filled with commercials. However Luke Harper crashed the party which prompted Bryan to leave commentary and nullify the threat. Roman Reigns was victorious and Roman and Bryan will be ready for Hell in a Cell this Sunday when they face Rowan and Harper.
MISS MISS MISS: Kofimania Dies
There’s no main event for those that seen it. Kofimania has officially died. I didn’t have a problem with Kofi losing. Well yes I did, however I expected Kofi to lose because it’s WWE and Vince has a strange obsession with Brock Lesnar. My biggest problem is the way Kofi lost. He literally got F5’ed and finished. Literally got no offense in at all. Kofi Kingston was the man who carried the WWE Championship for the majority of 2019 and got did dirty in the worst possible way. Then Rey Mysterio shows up with Cain Velasquez who Lesnar knows from his UFC past. We literally spent the last five minutes of Smackdown watching these two stare each other down. It’s clear WWE on FOX means the UFC is taking over and all the wrestlers don’t mean anything to Vince. Between Saudi and FOX, all Vince cares about is the money. Diehard wrestling fans are the ones that are going to suffer. Fortunately there are alternatives that air on Wednesday nights.
I had to wait a bit before writing this article because the way Kofi Kingston was treated in the main event absolutely pissed me off. However now that some time has passed I will say the first hour was fine. The women’s tag team match and the Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon matches were good. However I felt the second hour was nothing special and the finish cast a dark cloud over the show. The show itself felt like unorganized chaos and I seen people upset because there was no Stone Cold or Undertaker showing because apparently that was advertised? The commercial breaks were also at an all time annoyance, especially when you compare it to the wrestling shows on Wednesday. While Smackdown has a new look, everything felt the same old WWE to me. Hell in a Cell is this Sunday and we still only have three matches announced. Next Smackdown is the WWE Draft. No idea where that’s going to go, but we’ll find out next week. Let me know your thoughts on the show on Twitter and thanks for reading.
