NXT Hits and Misses 2.26.20 w/ The Chairman

This episode was highlighted by the return of Charlotte Flair to Full Sail. She wrestled Bianca Belair in the main event. Also Tommaso Ciampa and Austin Theory collided after their interaction last week. All this and more so let’s see the hits and misses.

HIT: Dominik Dijakovic Isn’t the Only One Feasting His Eyes on Keith Lee

Dominik Dijakovic is looking to get another shot at Keith Lee’s North American Championship. Cameron Grimes was his opponent and he was looking for an upset victory in this contest. However when Dijakovic was on the outside, Damian Priest ran by with a pipe and took the knee of Dijakovic out. The ref began the ten count and it was looking like Grimes was going to win by countout, which honestly would’ve been a solid decision because it would’ve kept Dijakovic looking strong. Dijakovic however wasn’t going to go down like that and got back into the ring at the last second. However Grimes was waiting and struck immediately with the Cave In to secure the win thanks to the assist from Priest. Later in the show, Priest made his intentions clear that he was looking at the NXT North American Championship as well and he would get Dijakovic out of the way if that’s what it takes. Awesome to see NXT utilizing their midcard championship with several wrestlers looking to compete for it opposed to how the US and Intercontinental Championships are treated on Raw and Smackdown.

HIT: What’s Next For the Prince???

Finn Balor is coming off an impressive victory over Johnny Gargano at NXT Takeover Portland. Balor knows Wrestlemania season is coming and everybody wants to know what he’s up to next. Before he could answer though, he was interrupted by Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel of Imperium. They were sent by WALTER and ambushed the Prince. Looks like we’re probably going to have Finn Balor vs WALTER at NXT Takeover Tampa more than likely. Sign me up!!! This is also debunks Balor vs Adam Cole for the NXT Championship for the time being.

MISS: Dakota Kai Feuding With Everyone

Mia Yim took on Xia Li in this match. Both women are trying to reestablish themselves in a deep NXT women’s division. However before this match could progress, Dakota Kai showed up along with her new ally Raquel Gonzalez. Kai of course had an issue with Mia Yim from taking her spot at War Games months ago. This led to a rollup pin by Xia Li to steal the win. Just a cluster of a segment and why is Dakota Kai focused on Mia Yim right now when she has a cage match next week against Tegan Nox?

HIT: Blackheart Puts an End to Theory

After last weeks confrontation, Austin Theory and Tommaso Ciampa faced off in a one on one match. The match itself was alright. I’ve heard all the hype on Theory, but I’m not quite seeing it yet. Maybe in time, but obviously Ciampa was winning this one and he did with the Fairy Tale Ending. Johnny Gargano ambushed Ciampa after the match and the two men brawled. Theory even tried getting a cheap shot in on Ciampa, but Ciampa knocked him out of the ring. In the end though, it was Johnny Wrestling left standing over his former friend. Nobody still knows why Gargano did what he did and I’m not listening to Corey Graves podcast to find out so I’ll wait until an episode of NXT for him to reveal his answers.

MISS: The Battle of Beasts

Bronson Reed took on Killian Dain in a battle of behemoths. Unfortunately this match wasn’t anything special. I would’ve preferred a cruiserweight match here in this spot opposed to two guys who are lost on the bottom of the NXT totem pole. Killian Dain finally won a match again with the Vader Bomb for what it’s worth, but I feel Dain has had his chances and never went anywhere. If NXT were to ever make us care about Bronson Reed, maybe he should’ve won here. Moving on…

HIT: Grizzled Young Vets Beat the Yankee Sons

Not sure if the Forgotten Sons are going to turn face now because of their sudden patriotism, but they battled the Grizzled Young Vets here after the comments they made last week about America. These are the matches I like because there’s a story here. This isn’t some random throw together match, we have a backstory. Also the NXT tag team division needs a spark and I feel the past few weeks we’ve gotten one. James Drake and Zack Gibson have been terrific in the matches I’ve seen and once again they were victorious hitting Blake with the Ticket to Mayhem. Grizzled Young Vets definitely want another shot at the Broserweights and other than Undisputed Era, I don’t see any other team more deserving of that title shot.

HIT: The Queen Runs Her Old Kingdom

We knew Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair were going to clash eventually, but we got it here in the main event. Eventually these two could have a huge match on a pay per view someday, but that isn’t the case here. Of course Charlotte isn’t losing here and she put Belair away with a spear followed by Natural Selection. Flair wasn’t done though when she grabbed a chair and looked to seriously injure Belair. Rhea Ripley however ran to the ring and confronted the Queen before anything could happen.

Better episode than last week, but it’s clear NXT is still trying to setup their stories for NXT Takeover Tampa. Roderick Strong and Velveteen Dream next week are going to wrestle again, this time inside a steel cage and of course Dakota Kai and Tegan Nox have a steel cage match as well next week.
