NXT Hits and Misses 4.29.20 w/ The Chairman

This episode of NXT was highlighted by an NXT North American Championship match between Keith Lee and Damian Priest and NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair took on Mia Yim in a non title contest. Let’s see what all the hits and misses were this week.

HIT: Swerve and Phantasma Battle in Block Action

The Cruiserweight tournament moves onto second match action and El Hijo del Phantasma looks to stay undefeated as he faces Isaiah “Swerve” Scott who looks to get his first win in the tournament and stay alive. Swerve and Phantasma kicked off the show with a good match and it was Swerve with a crucifix pin that gave him the win over Phantasma. Swerve cut a pretty good promo after the match. Phantasma meanwhile was confronted by two masked men again that tried abducting him, but Phantasma managed to fight them off again.

HOLD: Wicked Stepsister Steps on Kacy

Candice LeRae’s new heel persona made her in ring debut with husband Johnny Gargano at ringside. I personally like what they’ve done with Candice. She gave great reasons for why she’s doing things her way now. Candice is one of the best wrestlers in NXT and I felt they never did enough with her as a face. It was almost she was more of a supporting character and now she’s thriving with her husband at her side. Far as the match goes, it was hard to get invested into it. Probably because it was just a quick enhancement match against Kacy Catanzaro. However I dig the new finisher Wicked Stepsister Candice is using. I really hope this husband and wife duo of Johnny and Candice takes off, I think it could do wonders. It also gives Johnny a new storyline because quite frankly he’s done just about everything there is to do in NXT. So if being a slimy heel that helps his wife wins the title is the next chapter, so be it.

MISS: Newly Bros Show

While I did laugh at some of the stuff in this segment, the rest of it seemed forced. It’s almost as if Vince or a Raw/Smackdown writer got involved with this one. Timothy Thatcher is more serious than Pete Dunne and while he’s a nice fill in, it’s hard to recapture the magic that Riddle and Dunne had. Byron Saxton of course made things more awkward in this segment. The segment ended with Imperium’s Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel ambushing Riddle and Thatcher. Looks like we possibly have the next challengers for the NXT Tag Team Championship.

HIT: The Queen Reigns Over the Baddie

Charlotte Flair wanted to test herself against the newest women in NXT. She’s already had matches with Biance Belair and of course took the NXT Women’s Championship from Rhea Ripley. Now Flair meets Mia Yim. Yim of course wasn’t going to win, but this might have been one of her better matches in NXT. Of course it probably has alot to do with Charlotte bringing out the best in her. Charlotte of course won with the Figure Eight. Io Shirai came out after the match and confronted Charlotte and it was announced Io Shirai would challenge Charlotte Flair for the NXT Women’s Championship NEXT WEEK!!! This one is going to be awesome folks.

HIT: Dexter Lumis Takes Out Shane Thorne

While we’re still trying to figure out why Dexter Lumis has issues with the Undisputed Era, he’s still being featured regularly on NXT television. Dexter made quick work of Shane Thorne on this episode of NXT. We’ll have to sit back now and wait to see what Dexter’s next mysterious move is.

HIT: Drake’s Story Continues

Drake Maverick continues his quest in the cruiserweight tournament, this time against Tony Nese. Both men lost their first matches so this is must win match. Nese of course continues vowing that he never lost the title. Maverick, well we all know his story. Maverick managed to knock off Tony Nese and keep his hopes alive. Drake called out Kushida after the match knowing he’s going to have to defeat him to have a chance.

HIT: North American Championship Match

Damian Priest has been a thorn in Keith Lee’s side the past few weeks. Lee is still recovering after Priest hit him in the throat with a nightstick last week, but Lee is ready for this fight. The two rivals made this a good one. Priest of course introduced the nightstick in this contest, but Lee took it from him. Just when I thought Lee reached his breaking point and was going to assault Priest with the nightstick, he just handed it off to the ref. Lee then delivers not one, but two Spirit Bombs to put down the Archer of Infamy.

Decent episode of NXT, but next week is the big one!!!! Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream FINALLY meet for the NXT Championship. Also mentioned earlier Charlotte Flair defends the NXT Women’s Championship against Io Shirai. We also see the debut of Karrion Kross and Finn Balor will be on as well. Next week’s episode of NXT looks like it’s a can’t miss so I’m excited.
