NXT Hits and Misses 6.3.20 w/ The Chairman

On this episode of NXT, we find out who wins the NXT Crusierweight Championship between Drake Maverick and El Hijo del Fantasma. We also wrap up and loose ends in NXT before this Sunday’s NXT Takeover: In Your House. Here are this weeks hits and misses.
HOLD: The show kicked off with Mia Yim and Candice LeRae. Anyone that has watched the past few weeks know the rivalry brewing between these two ladies. Unfortunately their one on one match didn’t last long at all and ended up being a double countout. This was a major disappointment. Fortunately Keith Lee and Johnny Gargano got involved and the match was turned into a mixed tag team match. Gargano was furious about wrestling in street clothes, but this proved to be the difference maker in the end. Gargano’s car keys happened to be in his pocket and he used them to stab Lee in the eye. Yim was distracted by this and LeRae stole the match with a quick pin. I’m confident Lee and Gargano will put on an awesome match Sunday. I was hoping Yim and LeRae could’ve had their big singles match that was advertised, but of course it didn’t last long and NXT changed the game midway. I’m hoping LeRae and Yim get their moment down the road and they could very well get involved in Lee and Gargano’s match this Sunday.
HIT: Swerve Gets Payback on Nese
A few weeks ago Tony Nese and Isaiah “Swerve” Scott had an incident where Nese didn’t take kindly to Swerve’s comments about wrestlers losing every match in the recent tournament. Nese attacked Swerve before his final match for it. Now they clash here in this one on one match. Swerve of course defeated the crusierweight jobber Nese. Jack Gallagher of course was around for some reason, but didn’t help move this story forward. Good to see Swerve though get this win and hopefully propels him back into the conversation for a future title shot.
HOLD: Triple Threat Tag
Undisputed Era’s Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong faced off against Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch for the rights to become number one contenders to Imperium’s NXT Tag Team Championship. I feel like Undisputed Era really doesn’t need another NXT Tag Team Championship run and Lorcan and Burch is a tag team that can’t get into the next gear. There was a mystery team as well and it ended up being the returning Breezango. Dexter Lumis of course has his target set on the Undisputed Era and threw them off their game as Breezango ended up winning the number one contendership. Clearly they’re just going to enhance the reign of Imperium. Honestly I think the Breezango team has run its course and they’re better off parting ways. I’ll also say Fandango should just go back to calling himself Johnny Curtis because he hasn’t Fandangoed in years. Also if anyone cares Malcolm Bivens showed up with his two generic big guys.
HOLD: The Battle of Enhancements
The jobber of heels Aliyah took on the jobber of faces Santana Garrett and I didn’t know what the hell to expect. Before the match a clip played showing Chelsea Green firing Robert Stone. So much for the Robert Stone brand I guess. Stone did come out to ringside to scout Aliyah, but she ended up losing to Garrett. Stone walked away and looked like he was having a nervous breakdown as Aliyah pursued him. Guess there’s a story here at least.
MISS: Bronson Caved Inn
Cameron Grimes took on Bronson Reed in a match that wasn’t necessary. This was literally a time filler. Grimes of course is riding off the momentum because he got a win over Finn Balor and he won again here. Reed then got attacked after the match by Karrion Kross. I don’t understand Cameron Grimes and what people see in him.
HIT: Can Drake Save His Job?
Drake Maverick has survived up until this point, but now he has to face El Hijo Del Fantasma in the finals. It’s either win or go home for Drake Maverick. These guys had a solid amount of time to tell their story in the ring. The random masked men that have been after Fantasma made their presence known in this contest. Maverick ended up taking them both out saving Fantasma from being abducted. However Drake’s good gesture cost him the match. El Hijo hit the Phantom Driver and wins the Crusierweight Championship. Drake thanked the fans and the small amount of people in attendance were cheering Drake Maverick as he left the ring for the final time. However Triple H showed up and offered Drake a contract that he quickly signed. It looks like Drake Maverick is here to stay after all. Don’t know how I feel about this story with so many other wrestlers released and probably not coming back, but it got Drake Maverick a ton of support so I’ll be curious to see where things go for him in the future.
There were also some clips building towards the matches at NXT Takeover: In Your House and it was also announced Mia Yim, Tegan Nox, and Shotzi Blackheart will face Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai, and Raquel Gonzalez in a six women tag team match. This episode of NXT wasn’t memorable by any means. Honestly other than the Cruiserweight match, alot of it was forgettable. NXT Takeover: In Your House though is a stacked card and I’m looking forward to it. Here’s a quick rundown of the card.
Tommaso Ciampa vs Karrion Kross
Keith Lee (c) vs Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship
Charlotte Flair (c) vs Rhea Ripley vs Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship
Mia Yim, Shotzi Blackheart, Tegan Nox vs Candice LeRae, Raquel Gonzalez, Dakota Kai
Finn Balor vs Damian Priest
Adam Cole (c) vs Velveteen Dream for the NXT Championship in a Last Chance Backlot Brawl Match
Check out of Hot Tag Wrestling podcast this weekend where we will make our predictions on this great card and as always thanks for reading.
